Genes, Chromosomes & The Discovery of DNA

- Introduction & Process - - Weblinks - - Conclusion -

Introduction

We use the term DNA all the time in modern society. You will see it referred to on the TV, on the radio, in newspapers and magazines, and people use it in conversation, and yet it was only 60 years ago that scientists determined its structure.

You will find out about genes, chromosomes and DNA in this WebQuest, as well as how the structure of DNA was worked out through the efforts of four scientists.

In the past, the discovery was mainly attributed to Francis Crick and James Watson. You will also evaluate the role played by each of the four scientists that helped with the discovery.

Process

This WebQuest guides you through key ideas about genes, chromosomes and DNA, before finding out about the scientists that discovered the DNA structure.

When you've completed your WebQuest research, your teacher will ask you to write a diary extract, or perhaps a script, to describe the work of the scientists and the importance of DNA.

Click here to download a PDF copy of the WebQuest research template. Print it out and record your findings and ideas.
