Conclusion

Now you should be an expert on the properties of ceramics, polymers and composites. You will also know about how ceramics have been used to protect astronauts from the dangers of re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Your final task is to produce an advert for a company offering sightseeing trips into space. You will need to explain to future passengers that, despite some accidents in test flights, your commercial spaceship flights will be completely safe.

Some things to consider in your advert are:

  • What are ceramics, polymers and composites like?
  • What are their properties?
  • How have the properties of ceramics led to the material being used in space vehicles in the past?
  • How can you use these three types of material in the design of a spaceship in such a way that your passengers will be safe?
