Introduction

The changing seasons and movement of the sun were powerful features of life for early human societies, and influenced many superstitions and religions. The ancient Egyptians, for example, believed in many Gods, one of which was the Sun-God Ra, the ‘father of the Gods’. One of their beliefs was that Ra 'died' or was swallowed by Nut every evening as the sun dipped below the horizon. He travelled through the world of the dead by night and was then reborn in the morning.
